Last weekend I was lucky enough to be invited to go on a girly weekend break to Bath with my good friend Gill and her gorgeous dachshund dogs, Ralph and Floyd.
I travelled down on train on Friday afternoon, there is nothing nicer than getting to put your out of office on halfway through the day! Upon arriving and being picked up we headed to the stunning Combe Grove Hotel & Spa (http://combegrove.com/). We were greeted warmly and professionally and before we knew it we were shown to our garden lodge room. The hotel is split into two, hotel rooms in the manor and then the garden lodges which are animal friendly, which was fantastic for us.
Our room was clean and stylish and perfect for our needs (mostly gossiping, at home beauty treatments and drinking prosecco!). The only thing which was a tad annoying was the fact that the TV would only work on BBC1 & BBC2 – but we didn’t let that get to us!
Friday night we sampled the dinner at the bar and we were mightily impressed. Gill tucked into a delicious looking burger and I went for autumn risotto with butternut squash and mushrooms – which was simply delicious, especially washed down with a couple of large glasses of red. We then followed up with a sneaky pudding, well I had cheese because I just can’t help myself! For two courses and a couple of drinks each it came to an incredibly reasonable £55.
After a lovely night sleep (it’s amazing not waking up to the noise of sirens!) we woke up and lazily dragged ourselves for breakfast where we stuffed ourselves with pastries, fry ups, tea and coffee…you get the picture! But don’t fear, we then went for a swim in the stunning pool area to take away some of the guilt! The pool area has a wonderful view over the rolling hills and greenery, it was a little busy but it was a weekend (the image is from google images – I didn’t have my camera on me in the pool…obviously). There is also a wonderful lie down Jacuzzi – they had metal rod sun-bedesque style submerged in warm water and when you pressed the on button the bed turned into your own personal bubbly heaven – loved it!
Then after showering and getting ready – we hit the shops. Hard. On the cards were trips to H&M, M&S, Yankee Candle, Debenhams, Kiko Makeup, Superdrug….the list goes on. After spending WAY too much money it was time to calm the nerves with some wine and food and Gill recommended CAU (http://www.caurestaurants.com/) – and now I am fully recommending it to EVERYONE!
This is a steak restaurant to rival Gaucho – at a fraction of the price. I chowed down on a sirloin steak, chips and truffle mac and cheese and even had space to squeeze in some Churros! Everything was delicious and the service was impeccable.
Speaking of fantastic service, after shopping and eating ourselves silly we took the doggies for a walk and poor Floyd stung his little paws on nettles and the hotel could not do enough to help. After a request for vinegar and salt (there is a tip for you dog walkers!) he was feeling much better – so I got a real good cuddle
Saturday night was a total girl fest, with Gill pampering me with all of her Liz Earle products for an at home facial, painting toenails and watching random telly (on our two TV channels!). We then crashed out after a few glasses of prosecco!
Sunday was an early rise, more delicious breakfast in the gorgeous breakfast room with the sun shining in. After the fry up, I went for the more saintly option of porridge (pictured) topped with walnuts, berry compote and dates – YUM!
After packing up and spending some chill time in the stunning library (pictured) before setting off for the train home.
Overall it was a lovely weekend, was just what I needed and I came home a bit broker but incredibly happy. I can’t recommend the Combe Grove hotel enough – the service was amazing from the receptionists to the room cleaners – they were all super lovely.
Sadly this time round we didn’t get any treatments at the spa because we were too late calling up, which for me is just an excuse to book in to go back with hubby!
Until Next Time!
